After researching animal options, we decided on the Boer goat. Of the many goat breeds, the Boer goat is an easier breed to maintain. They do not require milking and they do not require shearing. Additionally, there was a need to keep down the brush in the pastures and they have done a great job eating down the pasture. Although they get big, they maintain their friendly and curious personality. That alone has won us over!
We started our chicken flock by purchasing day old chicks! Nurturing them and watching them mature into laying hens and crowing roosters (yes, we have several roosters!) has been quite the experience. Chickens are easy to keep without becoming overwhelmed. Most enjoyable is to be able to pick up the warm fresh egg and incorporate it into a farm fresh breakfast. Eggs are an invaluable ingredient in the art of cooking!
